The Toblerone brand

Toblerone was first introduced in 1908 in Switzerland by Theodor Tobler and his cousin Emil Baumann. Together, they conceived and designed this unique chocolate bar at the chocolate factory called "Fabrique de Chocolat Berne, Tobler & Co." in Bern, Switzerland. This factory was founded in 1899 by Theodor and his father Jean Tobler. The name is a combination of "Tobler" and the Italian word "Torrone" , which is a type of nougat.

The triangular shape of the bar was inspired by the nearby Swiss Alps. The logo on Toblerone's packaging featured an image of Mount Matterhorn until 2023. As production was increasingly moved abroad, the brand had to remove the mountain from the logo by the Swiss government, due to the strict rules Switzerland imposes on the use of national symbols.

According to the brand, the relocation of production is necessary to keep up with the high demand. Since its launch, Toblerone has grown into an iconic brand and one of the most loved chocolate brands in the world.

What's in Toblerone?

Toblerone consists mainly of the following ingredients: sugar, whole milk powder, cocoa butter, cocoa mass, honey (3%), butter oil, almonds (1.6%), emulsifier (soy lecithin), egg white, flavourings (vanilla). It also contains traces of other nuts. Toblerone is a mixture of Swiss chocolate and almond and honey nougat pieces, which gives it its distinctive texture and flavour. It is important to consult the ingredient list for specific information, as there may be variations in different Toblerone varieties and countries.

Is toblerone gluten-free?

Toblerone contains no ingredients that naturally contain gluten, such as wheat, barley or rye. Therefore, Toblerone is generally considered gluten-free. However, it is important to note that Toblerone is produced in factories that may process ingredients containing gluten. As a result, traces of gluten may be present. If you follow a strict gluten-free diet, it is advisable to check the packaging and, if necessary, contact the manufacturer for more information on possible cross-contamination and gluten information.
